The question comes up at almost every fitting appointment. A client arrives thinking she needs a bra and leaves with a bralette, or the reverse. The distinction is not simply about cup size or support level, though those matter. It is about what you are doing in the piece and how you want to feel in it.
What a bralette actually provides ¶
A bralette is an unstructured, usually wireless style that provides light support through fabric tension rather than through boning or underwire. It works well for smaller cup sizes and for activities where you are not moving vigorously. It also works well as a layering piece, worn under a sheer top or a low-back dress. The Shiro bralette, for example, is designed to be visible at the neckline without looking like underwear.
When an underwired bra makes more sense ¶
Underwired bras provide lift and separation through a rigid channel that sits under the breast tissue. For larger cup sizes, this structure is often necessary for comfort over a full day. The key is that the wire should sit flat against the ribcage at all points; if it lifts away from the chest at the centre or the sides, the size is wrong. A properly fitted underwired bra should not be felt during normal movement.
The soft cup option in between ¶
The Sora soft cup bra occupies the space between a bralette and a wired bra. It has a shaped cup that provides more definition than a bralette without the rigidity of an underwire. It is the piece we recommend most often at fitting appointments, particularly for clients who find underwired styles uncomfortable after a few hours but want more structure than a bralette provides. The microfibre fabric from Fukui Prefecture has a weight and density that holds the cup shape without internal boning.
How to decide at a fitting ¶
The most useful question to ask yourself is: what will I be doing in this piece, and for how long? A bralette for a day at the desk is a different proposition from a bralette for a day of travel.
