Silk has a reputation for being difficult, and some of that reputation is earned. But most silk lingerie is damaged not by washing but by the wrong kind of washing: too hot, too agitated, or dried in a way that stresses the fibre. The Kinu slip, made from Tango habotai, will last for years with straightforward care.

Hand washing is the only method

Machine washing, even on a delicate cycle, subjects silk to more agitation than the fibre can handle consistently. Hand wash in cool water (below 30 degrees Celsius) with a detergent formulated for silk or wool. Avoid anything with enzymes, which break down protein fibres. Submerge the piece, move it gently through the water for two to three minutes, and rinse thoroughly. Do not wring.

Drying without distortion

After washing, lay the piece flat on a clean dry towel and roll the towel to absorb excess water. Then unroll and lay the piece flat on a fresh dry surface, reshaping it gently to its original dimensions. Never hang silk to dry while wet; the weight of the water will stretch the fabric along the grain. Dry away from direct sunlight, which degrades the dye and weakens the fibre over time.

Ironing and steaming

Habotai silk can be ironed on a low setting (silk or synthetic setting on most irons) while slightly damp, on the reverse side of the fabric. A steamer is gentler and works well for removing creases without direct contact. Never iron silk that is fully dry; the heat can scorch the surface. The Kinu slip is cut on the bias, which means it will hang out most creases naturally if left on a hanger for a few hours.

Storage

Store silk flat or loosely folded, not compressed. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and can cause yellowing. A cotton or linen storage bag is ideal. Cedar blocks will deter moths without the chemical residue of mothballs, which can damage silk over time. If you are storing a piece for a season, air it briefly before putting it away.

The Kinu slip comes with a care card that covers these points. If you have a question about a specific piece, email us and we will advise.
